A quick, budget-friendly twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak made with ground beef, caramelized onions, bell peppers, and gooey provolone cheese in toasted sandwich rolls.

  • 1 lb lean ground beef (85/15 or 90/10)
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices provolone cheese or 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 soft hoagie rolls or sub rolls

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the bell peppers and onions. Set them aside.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Add the ground beef and break it up with a spatula. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Push the cooked beef to one side of the skillet. Add the sliced onions and peppers to the other side. Stir occasionally and cook for 5-7 minutes until the veggies are soft and slightly caramelized.
  4. Mix the cooked veggies and beef together in the skillet. Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce and stir well to coat everything evenly. Cook for another 2 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Toast the sandwich rolls if desired. Place them on a baking sheet and broil for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  6. Lay slices or sprinkle shredded provolone cheese over the beef and veggie mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the cheese melt for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Spoon the beef and cheese mixture into the toasted sandwich rolls. Serve immediately while warm and melty.
