A quick and easy recipe for perfectly grilled juicy classic hot dogs with toasted buns, ideal for backyard barbecues, family dinners, and casual gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Hot dog sausages (beef or pork with natural casings, e.g., Nathan’s or Johnsonville)
  • Hot dog buns (classic soft white or brioche buns)
  • Unsalted butter or neutral oil (like canola) for toasting buns
  • Condiments: ketchup, yellow mustard, relish, diced onions, sauerkraut, or favorite toppings
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, jalapeños, chili, coleslaw

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, about 375°F.
  2. Take hot dog sausages out of the fridge 10-15 minutes before grilling to reach room temperature.
  3. Place sausages on the grill perpendicular to the grates and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side, turning frequently with tongs until golden-brown with slight char.
  4. Brush buns lightly with melted butter or oil and place cut side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until toasted and warm.
  5. Place grilled sausages in buns and add favorite condiments and toppings.
  6. Serve immediately while hot dogs are juicy and buns are warm.

Notes

Avoid poking holes in sausages to keep them juicy. Keep grill at medium heat to prevent bursting. Toast buns just before sausages finish cooking. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Leaner sausages like chicken or turkey cook faster and can dry out if overcooked.
