A light, refreshing summer appetizer featuring juicy strawberries, fresh basil, and a tangy balsamic drizzle on toasted bread. Perfect for quick gatherings and easy entertaining.

Ingredients

Scale
  • French baguette or rustic Italian bread, sliced into ½-inch thick pieces
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and diced
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced or torn
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar
  • 1 large garlic clove, peeled and halved
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the baguette into ½-inch pieces. Brush each slice lightly with olive oil on both sides and arrange on a baking sheet in a single layer.
  2. Toast the bread in the oven for 7-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  3. While the bread is still warm, rub each slice with the cut side of the garlic clove.
  4. In a small bowl, combine diced strawberries, basil, balsamic vinegar, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Add honey or maple syrup if balsamic is sharp. Toss gently to coat.
  5. Spoon the strawberry mixture generously onto each toasted bread slice. Drizzle extra balsamic vinegar or reduction if desired.
  6. Optionally, sprinkle flaky sea salt on top before serving.

Notes

Toast bread just right to avoid sogginess. Use aged balsamic vinegar for best flavor or reduce regular balsamic on stove. Rub warm bread with garlic for added aroma. Prepare topping just before serving to keep strawberries fresh.
