A collection of easy, refreshing summer cocktails made with fresh citrus, herbs, and simple ingredients, perfect for brightening up any warm day.

Ingredients

  • Fresh citrus: lemons, limes, oranges (juice and wedges)
  • Fresh herbs: mint leaves, basil, or rosemary
  • Fruits: berries (strawberries, raspberries), watermelon chunks, cucumber slices
  • Spirits: vodka, gin, rum, tequila
  • Sweeteners: simple syrup, honey, or agave nectar
  • Mixers: sparkling water, club soda, tonic water
  • Ice: crushed or cubed
  • Optional extras: bitters, fresh ginger juice, dash of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare fresh ingredients by rinsing herbs and fruits thoroughly. Slice citrus into wedges or rounds, and lightly muddle berries or cucumber slices to release juices.
  2. Place mint leaves or basil with a bit of sweetener at the bottom of your shaker or jar. Gently press with a muddler without pulverizing.
  3. Pour in 2 oz (60 ml) of your chosen spirit, 1 oz (30 ml) fresh citrus juice, and 0.5 oz (15 ml) simple syrup or honey. Add a splash of bitters if desired.
  4. Fill shaker with ice cubes or crushed ice. Secure lid and shake vigorously until the outside feels cold and frosty.
  5. Strain cocktail into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with sparkling water or tonic, and gently stir to combine.
  6. Garnish with a sprig of mint, a thin citrus wheel, or a few berries.

Notes

Do not over-muddle herbs to avoid bitterness. Use freshly squeezed citrus juice for best flavor. Chill glasses before serving. Adjust sweetness and sourness to taste. For batch preparation, muddle fresh herbs for each serving. Avoid reheating cocktails; serve cold and fresh.
