A quick and easy recipe for fluffy cinnamon French toast with a golden crust and warm, cozy flavors. Perfect for weekend brunches or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk (240 ml; almond or oat milk can be used)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (can substitute honey or maple syrup)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Whisk the custard: In a large mixing bowl, crack 4 large eggs and whisk until combined. Add 1 cup whole milk, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until smooth, about 3 minutes.
  2. Prepare the bread: Take 8 thick slices of brioche or challah. Lightly toast fresh bread for 1-2 minutes if desired to help hold up during soaking.
  3. Soak the bread: Dip each slice into the egg mixture, soaking for 20-30 seconds per side. Bread should be moist but not soggy. Place soaked slices on a wire rack to let excess custard drip off.
  4. Heat skillet: Place a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon unsalted butter until foaming but not browned.
  5. Cook the French toast: Place 2-3 soaked slices in the skillet without crowding. Cook 3-4 minutes on the first side until golden and crispy at edges. Flip and cook 2-3 minutes on the other side until puffed and fluffy.
  6. Repeat and serve: Add more butter as needed and cook remaining slices. Serve immediately with toppings like maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

Use thick-cut bread like brioche or challah for best texture. Avoid soaking bread too long to prevent sogginess. Cook on medium heat to avoid burning cinnamon sugar. Keep cooked toast warm in a low oven (200Β°F) if cooking in batches. For dairy-free, substitute milk and butter with plant-based alternatives. For gluten-free, use sturdy gluten-free bread.
