  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature) or 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice (let sit 5 minutes)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 4 cups, canola or peanut oil recommended)

Instructions

  1. Slice the hot dogs into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5 inches long. Pat them dry with paper towels.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined without lumps.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until fully blended. Pour into dry ingredients and stir gently until combined. Batter should be thick but smooth; add more buttermilk if too thick.
  4. Pour vegetable oil into a deep pot to a depth of about 3 inches. Heat over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Using a fork or skewer, dip each hot dog piece into the batter, coating fully but not dripping. Let excess batter drip off.
  6. Fry 5-6 pieces at a time in hot oil, turning occasionally, for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels or wire rack. Let cool slightly before serving.
