This festive holiday appetizer features a tangy, sweet cranberry topping swirled over a velvety cream cheese base. Quick to prepare and perfect for parties, it’s a crowd-pleaser that’s easy to customize for different diets.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened (2 blocks)
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Assorted crackers (Ritz, Wheat Thins, pretzel thins, gluten-free crackers)
  • Toasted baguette slices
  • Fresh herbs (parsley or mint, optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, water, and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Stir and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and mixture thickens. If using frozen cranberries, add 2-3 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let cranberry sauce cool to room temperature (15-20 minutes). For faster cooling, spread in a shallow dish.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth and fluffy (2-3 minutes with mixer, 5 minutes by hand).
  5. Spread whipped cream cheese in an even layer on a serving platter or shallow bowl (about 1/2-inch thick).
  6. Spoon cooled cranberry topping over cream cheese. Swirl gently for marbling or keep rustic.
  7. Garnish with fresh herbs and extra orange zest if desired.
  8. Arrange crackers or baguette slices around the platter. Serve immediately or chill for up to 2 hours.

Notes

For a vegan version, use plant-based cream cheese and coconut sugar. Cranberry topping can be made ahead and refrigerated. For a smoother dip, pulse cranberry sauce in a food processor. Serve slightly chilled for best texture. Optional toppings include toasted nuts or extra orange zest.
