A hearty and comforting dish featuring juicy hamburger steaks in a creamy gravy, baked to perfection for cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup diced yellow onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Potatoes (optional, sliced)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your baking dish lightly with cooking spray or a dab of butter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced yellow onion, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined but don’t overwork the meat.
  3. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, keeping them uniform in thickness.
  4. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Once melted, sear the hamburger steaks for 2-3 minutes per side until browned.
  5. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside. Add another tablespoon of butter to the skillet and sauté diced onions until soft and slightly caramelized.
  6. Sprinkle all-purpose flour over the onions and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  7. Slowly pour in beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and continue whisking until the gravy thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  8. Layer the hamburger steaks in the prepared baking dish. If using sliced potatoes, arrange them around the steaks.
  9. Pour the gravy evenly over the steaks and potatoes (if using) to coat everything generously.
  10. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to let the gravy bubble and thicken slightly.
  11. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Don’t skip the searing step—it locks in the juices and adds a nice crust to the steaks.’, ‘Taste your gravy before pouring it over the steaks and adjust the seasoning as needed.’, ‘For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or thyme to the gravy.’, ‘If your oven runs hot, check the bake a few minutes early to prevent overcooking the steaks.’]
